MAHALAYA AMAVASYA is the Most important Last Day of PITRU PAKSHA (Fortnight for Ancestors) on which Departed Ancestors, Descend to Earth & Wait for their Progeny to Quench their Thirst & Hunger
Unless QUENCHED & SATIATED, their Agony of Thirst & Hunger, involuntarily Transforms as PITRU DOSHAS (curses) to the Progeny
पितृदोषात् भवेत् क्लेशं, परिवारे मनोव्यथा।
विघ्नं सर्वकार्येषु, धनहानिः प्रजाक्षयः॥

Means:
Due to Pitru Doshas, One Suffers, Mental Agony, Unhappy Family Life, Obstacles to Progress, Loss of Wealth, Childlessness & Problems with Children
PITRU DOSHAS are Stumbling Blocks in Progress & Burden of Weights, that Holds One Back in Life, Most of the Problems in Life, Such as, Lack of Success, Peace of Mind, Happiness & Prosperity are Because of PITRU DOSHAS.
पञ्चम्यां पितरस्तृप्ताः कुर्वन्ति हितमात्मनः।
अकुर्वतः पितृन् क्रोधात् शपन्ति च स्ववंशजान्॥

Means:
When Departed Ancestors are Kept Satisfied, by Performing Ritualistic Duties towards Them, Their Satisfaction, Bestows Happiness to their Children, Else, their Dissatisfaction, Acts as a Curse to their Children
While Offering “PITRU TARPAN” on Mahalaya Amavasya, Quenches the Thirst of Departed Ancestors & Feeding Cows Satisfies their Hunger, Sparing the Progeny from “PITRU DOSHAS”

Means:
Life becomes Pleasing & Pleasant, When Departed Ancestors are Kept Pleased & Satisfied, by Performing the Ritualistic Duties towards Them.
