A SHORT STORY ABOUT EQUANIMITY đ
SHUBHA RATRI đď¸
Once SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA, was crossing RIVER GANGA, in a boat. The boat was full, and amongst them, was a Kali Upasaka, who obtained great Siddhis (powers). When the boatman came to collect his fare of 4 annas, he refused saying that he is a man who is blessed with divine powers and needs to be respected, and none should ask him money.
The boatman refused to take him for free. The man got up in anger, and shouted aloud that he is a divine man, and needs to be respected, and walked on the waters and reached the shore, and waited for the boat to arrive, as he knew that seeing his powers, all will prostrate at his feet.
As expected, all fell at his feet, and the boatman asked for forgiveness. The Upasaka was swelling with pride, and then He saw RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA who was smiling and walking away without touching his feet, unlike the other passengers. He called PARAMAHAMSA, and asked why he was smiling, and why he didn't touch his feet.
SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA said he smiled because he thought that the Upasaka was foolish, and he needn't touch the feet of anyone, who is filled with pride and vanity.
The Upasaka seething with anger asked him to explain, else he would curse Sri PARAMAHAMSA.
RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA calmly said that, he wasted such precious siddhi, that might have taken him years of Japa, pooja and chanting, of Ma Kali, just to save 4 annas, and that shows how much he values his Upasana.
And any one who is overtaken by pride, is a slave of his material instincts, and hence needn't be respected.
Through this story, SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA, teaches that when we do not value what we have, and when pride takes over us, for our successes, we are not WISEđ
