This miraculous incident happened on the 7th of NOVEMBER 1979, in TIRUMALA š
This was the year when Tirumala faced a severe drought. PAPANASAM reservoir which now supplies water to entire TIRUMALA was under construction, and GOGARBHAM Reservoir was almost Dry.
The then executive officer of TIRUMALA Sri. P.V.R. K PRASAD, was worried that if there are no rains and the reservoir goes empty, addressing the needs of 25,000 pilgrims per day would be impossible. After exploring all the practical options, it was decided that if there are no rains, and the reservoir goes bone dry, the only option would be to stop the darshan of BHAGAWAN VENKATESHWARA, till the water crisis is solved.
Sri. P.V.R.K PRASAD ji didn't want that to happen as pilgrims plan their yatra months in advance. Then he went to the asthana pandit of Tirumala, SRI. UPPULURI GANAPATHI SHASTRI, a ninety year old erudite vedic scholar to ask him for a solution from Vedas. Sri UPPULURI GANAPATHI SHASTRI ji without a streak of doubt said there are many apt solutions in the Vedas to counter draught, & he suggested VARUNA JAPA with learned RITWIKS to beget rains.
As a last resort, NOVEMBER 1 1979 was fixed as the date for VARUNA JAPAM. But the RITWIKS that were supposed to do the japa didn't turn up the day before, after all the arrangements were done. Disappointed and worried, Sri P.V.R.K PRASAD frantically tried for other alternatives, but failed. On 7th of November he stood in front of Bhagawan Venkateshwara and said that now he only has to come for rescue as the water would last only for 10 days. And with heavy heart he walked back home.
At around Midnight when the temple town was in deep slumber, amidst the locked doors of the temple, the huge bronze Bells from ANANDA NILAYAM, the sanctum sanctorum of SRI VENKATESHWARA SWAMY started ringing all by themselves. Hearing the bells, the shocked Archakas, staff and even SRI P.V.R.K PRASAD ran to the temple, and from behind the locked doors, the Bells continued to ring for a while and suddenly stopped.
As it was against AGAMA SHASTRA to open the closed doors after EKANTHA SEVA, all of them left to spend a restless night. At dawn the entire temple was checked, but to everyone's surprise none were found in the temple, and it was decided that it was Bhagawan's assurance to the SHARANAGATHI of SRI PRASAD.
As if by miracle, in a few minutes, RITWIKS arrived, and apologised for the delay and said that they would start VARUNA Japam immediately. The ritual continued for three days, but there was no sign of rain. The scorching Sun was at his best, and on the final day, After the final rituals,carrying the Ceremonial Deities in their hands,all the Rithviks were returning to the main temple.
PVRK Prasad, the special invitees, the engineers, the board officials, the visitors, the pilgrims, the security staff, members from the press were also silently following them. Then as if by miracle, the scorching Sun was pushed aside by a thunderous cloud, and it started raining, to the astonishment of all. It rained and rained for a whole week filling all lakes, and reservoirs of TIRUMALA.
To this day, this miracle stands as a landmark of SHARANAGATHI, FAITH AND the astute science of rituals in Vedas.
