CHATRAPATI SHIVAJI Maharaj,seized the RAIGAD FORT near Pune in 1674, and made it his capital. The fort sits atop a hill in the Western Ghats, and massive walls protect it from all sides. A village sprawled at the base of the hill, and many from the village would come and sell their goods to people living inside the fort.

One such peraon was a Milk maid HIRAKANI, who would trek up the hill via the road leading directly to the fort gates, which opened at dawn and shut at dusk each day, and the rule dictated that the gates would not be opened for anyone till the next morning.

One day, she was late and hurriedly as she reached the gates, they were closed. Though she begged the soldiers to open the gates as her new born child was alone , the soldiers fearing CHATRAPATI SHIVAJI Maharaj didn't budge, and asked her to take shelter in the fort till dawn.

With the thought of her baby being alone and hungry, HIRAKANI scaled-down the dangerous hillside in the dead of night. Though severely shaken, scratched and hurt from the harrowing journey, she managed to reach her baby. The next morning, she again was at the fort , and the shocked soldiers knowing that she scaled down the hill breaking rules, took HIRAKANI To CHATRAPATI SHIVAJI Maharaj.

HIRAKANI pleaded guilty of breaking rules, and said that she herself couldn't believe how she climbed down, and the crying face of her hungry child motivated her to do so. Shivaji heard her story and then looked at the scratches on Her hands and feet, and bowed down and touched her feet.

He apologised to her, and built a wall at the unprotected vertical drop and named it HIRAKANI BURUJ, which exists to this day. While HIRAKANI did not have any magical powers, what she did have, was a Staunch Mother's will to reach her hungry crying child.

There is nothing a mother can't do for her children. She can cross oceans, climb hillocks and give up herself to protect her children. ADISHANKARACHARYA thus wrote the most beautiful MATHRU PANCHAKAM, as a tribute to a mother and her love, in which the 5 shlokas bow down to the piety of a mother🙏😊
