SHORT DHARMIC STORY:
Long ago in Guruvayur, there was a young girl called MANJULA. She was a great devotee of KRISHNA, and everyday, she would make beautiful garlands with great joy, devotion and enthusiasm, and offer them to Krishna in the Guruvayoor temple.
One day while making garlands, she was so engrossed in singing and chanting Krishna's praises, that she lost time, and by the time she reached the temple with the garlands, the temple was closed.
MANJULA felt so bad that she broke into uncontrollable sobs and started crying. Another devotee, POONTHANAM, who was passing by, saw MANJULA, who was sitting under a Banyan tree and crying. When he asked, she said that she was late today with the garlands as she was immersed in the ocean of Bhakti for Krishna and she couldn't offer garlands to the deity. POONTHANAM consoled her and told her KRISHNA is BHAVA GRAAHI (meaning, the one who sees the intention), and would accept her garlands, and asked her to leave the garlands at the foot of the tree with an intention, she is offering them to the idol in the Sanctum Sanctorum. She did as said so, and left with a light heart.
The next day, when the PUJARIS opened the doors of the GARBHA GRIHA, they were surprised that the vigraha was adorned with garlands they didn't decorate with. Nevertheless, while they removed all the flowers and garlands, some garlands couldn't be removed. How much ever effort they put, they couldn't remove them. POONTHANAM, who arrived then, explained them about MANJULA and her garlands, and said that the flowers were blossoms of her elevated devotion, and only can be removed by her. MANJULA was called, who was overwhelmed with joy, and fell at Krishna's feet with tears of joy.
In reverence to her Bhakti, the Banyan tree is worshipped in GURUVAYOOR on par with Srikrishna in the temple, and is called MANJULA TARU (Meaning, tree called Manjula)
To this day, MANJULA TARU is worshipped before going into the temple đ
