TODAY (22/8/23) MORNINGS SHORT DHARMIC STORY:
Long ago there was a poor Brahmin, who was orphaned at a very young age. As he has no parents, he recieved no initiation or samskaras (no mandatory rituals were performed) and he remained illiterate. He would go to the forest, cut greengrass, and sell it for his livelihood. One day, he wanted more money, so he thought of picking up wood too.
He wandered deep into the forest. Unknown to him, YAMA DHOOTAS were following him too, as his life was to come to an end that day with a snake bite. In the forest, the Brahmin reached a place, where there was a beautiful TULASI VANAM. (big patch of TULASI shrubs).
As he saw that, he thought "such beautiful TULASI, I will pick some and give it to the Pujari in the VENUGOPALA SWAMY TEMPLE in the village, so that he can make beautiful garlands for KRISHNA" .
He nicely collected Tulasi with all reverance, and put it on his head. Strangely, the Yama dhootas, who were following him, were prevented from approaching him. The Brahmin collected wood, and walked back home, unaware that a deadly Cobra crawled into the pile of wood on his head. Neither the snake was able to bite him, nor the Yama dhootas were able to approach him.
As he reached the VENUGOPALA SWAMY TEMPLE, he handed over the Tulasi to the priest. The priest who was an enlightened man, could see the Yama dhootas, and he asked them what they were doing there. The Yama dhootas replied that as per Destiny, the Brahmin should die with a snake bite, and hence they came to fetch him. But strangely, the time of his destined death passed, and for some strange reason neither the snake on his head nor they are able to take his life.
The Pujari took the Tulasi, and immediately offered it to Bhagawan on the Brahmin's name. As he did that, the Yama dhootas vanished, and the snake jumped from the pile of wood and hastily crawled into the woods. Frozen with fear seeing the snake, the Brahmin dropped the pile of wood, only to be comforted by the Pujari ji that he was fortunate that he carried Tulasi with him today, else he would have been a dead man.
Those who carry TULASI with them would be protected always from misfortunes is what this BHAGAWATA KATHA says,
Which is why TULASI PLANT is planted in houses and worshipped 🙏
Jai Srikrishna 🙏
