SHORT EVENING DHARMIC STORY
22/8/23:
In the year 1345 CE, in a place called MANGALWEDHA, near Pandharpur, was born a boy into an aristocratic Brahmin family. He was named RAGHUNATH, by his proud parents. RAGHUNATH grew up into a handsome lad, and was sturdy and very active. His favourite pastime was horse riding with friends into the forests.
One day after a good time with friends, he was thirsty, and he rode the horse into the river, and without getting down, drank directly from the river.
A Sanyasi, who saw this screamed at him:
" किं पशु पुनर्जन्म कः"
Meaning, were you an animal in your previous birth?
These words triggered his past life from his memory, and his entire life was recalled by him.
RAGHUNATH, in his previous life, was the BULL of MADHWACHARYA. He would sit along with the disciples of MADHWACHARYA, and listen to all he taught with rapt attention.
One day when the disciples asked him, who would transcribe and pass on his teachings, MADHWACHARYA smiled and said this BULL. The disciples felt insulted and intimidated by this. After serving his master for many years, and listening to all his teachings, the Bull passed away, to be born again as RAGHUNATH.
As he got the vision on his past life, and as he understood his purpose and fell at the feet of the sanyasi, who was a great follower of MADHWA SAMPRADAYA, and his name was AKSHOBHYA TEERTHA.
Sri AKSHOBHYA TEERTHA asked him to first get the permission of his parents, which they denied at first. But from that day on, whenever they saw RAGHUNATH, he appeared to them as ADISESHA.
When they went to AKSHOBHYA TEERTHA, he said that Raghunath was born into this world with a purpose, and should be allowed to renounce. The parents agreed and RAGHUNATH was given SANYASA DEEKSHA, and was named JAYA TEERTHA by his guru.
He soon attained enlightenment, and translated many works of MADHWACHARYA.
In the year 1388 CE, on the banks of River KAGINI in MALKHED, JAYA TEERTHA, informed his disciples that it was time to leave his body to reach the lotus feet of Krishna, and sat in deep meditation, and attained Moksha.
