The miser, and the power of DANAM

21/8/23, MORNING SHORT DHARMIC STORY:

Long ago, in the city of UJJAIN, there was a rich merchant, who was very miserly. Leave aside charity, he wouldn't spend money on his family also. After living a disgusting life, he died one day.

To his surprise, Deva dhootas came and took him to swarga, and he was throned as king of swarga loka. Confused, he asked Indra, why he a miser and hoarder was blessed with the throne of Indra.

Indra said, one day, a dying dog was sitting near his house, and he after his lunch, washed his hands near him, unaware that the dog was sitting there. The water from him washing his hands fell on the dog, and it regained consciousness.

Knowingly or unknowingly, because he saved a life, he has accumulated the punya to bcome king of swarga loka for 21 days. And That is the power of Charity or DANAM

The miser was amazed at the power of Dana. If what he did unknowingly could give him the post of Indra, what could have been the result of he had done charity in all awareness, he thought.

After a while, he called all the devas, rishis etc, and and donated all he had as a king of swarga to everyone. Stunned by this, when Indra asked him what he was doing and that he was a king only temporarily, the miser said, for a charity I was unaware, I got to become the king of swarga. Now that I have donated with all awareness, I am waiting for the result, and he smiled🙏
