A SHORT STORY ABOUT A DEVOTEE FOR WHOM BHAGAWAN SHIVA BECAME A SERVANTšš
Long ago, in the 14th century, there was a great devotee of BHAGAWAN SHIVA, called VIDYAPATI. Not only was he an astute devotee of Shiva, but he was also an erudite poet too, whose life and poetry revolved around BHAGAWAN SHIVA.
VIDYAPATI worked in the courts of the OINIWAR DYNASTY of the kings of MITHILA and was a quite respected man. He strongly desired to visit KASHI, and do GANGA SNANA, but he couldn't for some reason or the other.
VIDYAPATI was childless, and he and his wife wholeheartedly accepted that whatever their life gave, was Shiva's blessing, and they believed that SHIVA was their son.
One day, a boy named UGNA came to them, and introduced himself as an orphan, and asked them for work. He was employed, and soon he became the cornerstone of the house. VIDYAPATI and his wife's life became dependent and revolved around UGNA, who too worked and took care of the couple with utmost devotion.
As VIDYAPATI became old, his desire to visit KASHI became strong, and he decided to go to Kashi, and worship VISHWANATHA, after GANGASNAN.
Accompanied by UGNA, he set out for the pilgrimage, and after a few days of journey, his body gave up, and VIDYAPATI understood that he wasn't going to make it.
He cried and pleaded with SHIVA, that if his devotion was pure, and if his life was filled with nothing but SHIVA, his wish of doing GANGASNAN , and darshan of VISHWANATH, be fulfilled. He felt UGNA's hand on his forehead, and as he slowly opened his eyes, he saw that UGNA was none other than SHIVA himself, and that he was being drenched in the waters of MA GANGA, from his JATA JUTA (locks of matted hair).
VIDYAPATI praised SHIVA in the most beautiful poetry, and left his mortal body seeing the divine form of Shiva, speechless and shocked, that Bhagawan SHIVA himself served him as SERVANT for so many years.
The place where this incident happened, is named VIDYAPATI NAGAR IN BIHAR, and a temple is constructed here for Bhagawan Shiva, on the banks of RIVER GANGA š
BHAGAWAN is so merciful, that if we have faith and devotion on him, he goes to any extent to take care of us.
