A SHORT DHARMIC STORY THAT TELLS ABOUT THE ILL EFFECTS OF GOSSIP AND SPREADING RUMOURS đ
Long ago, there was a righteous Brahmin, VISHNU SHARMA, who lived with his daughter in Ujjain. Though VISHNU SHARMA was always in problems and troubles, he didn't leave his righteousness.
One day, a great sadhu came to his house, and withWhatever meagre he had, he did all athithi satkaras ( honours) to the Sadhu. He went into spiritual conversation with the sadhu and at the end, he asked why he couldn't provide much to his family and why he is always into troubles and problems.
The Sadhu thought for a moment and said, that his Sanchita Papa Karma ( karma accumulated through many births) is being a hurdle and he would clear it with an idea. He went into the town and told someone that VISHNU SHARMA eats meat. The person who heard this, angrily said he knows VISHNU SHARMA and he would never do anything unrighteous.
Then another came, who had a grudge on VISHNU SHARMA, and he spread the rumour to all . Some carried it, some who knew him ignored it. As the rumour got carried by people with malice, or For time pass, VISHNU SHARMA'S sanchita papa got diminished, and he became fortunate.
Those who baselessly carried the rumours, and those who spread the rumour on purpose took over his Sanchita Papa and their fortunes soon diminished. This story from UTTARA RAMA CHARITA by BHAVABHUTI, is an essential lesson that those who spread rumours without verification, with malice, envy, or sadism, will get deprived of their punya.
